IN the lead up to Thursday's Group 2 Ladbrokes Maitland Gold Cup heats we go back to 2013 and relive the outstanding victory by Black Magic Opal in the $40,000 to-the-winner feature.

Trained at the time by his proud owner/breeders Les and Carol Hudson, the son of Magic Sprite and Awesome Opal took out the feature event at just his 15th race start, winning 12 of those performances in emphatic fashion.

Just a month on from his Maitland Cup victory, the hugely talented sprinter was sold to Victorian interests, doing his future racing for Jason and Seona Thompson.

What a career he went onto forge! Winning 35 of his 48 starts, with prizemoney on the verge of $600,000.

Winner of the 2013 Group 2 Geelong Cup in the sizzling track record time of 25.10, Black Magic Opal also took out the 2014 Group 2 Warrnambool Cup, as well as finishing a half-length second to Paw Licking in a Group 1 Hobart Thousand Final.

But his crowning glory was in the 2013 Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park, annexing the $350,000 to-the-winner event in outstanding fashion.

As a sire, Black Magic Opal has proven more than influential as well, producing chasers the ilk of Lightning Frank, Black Opium and Bewildering…
