Cheapie To Light Up Nowra On 520m Debut

WAGGA trainer Jess Fothergill is confident the 520 metre journey will be within reach of her in form speed machine Agent Chevrolet.

WAGGA trainer Jess Fothergill is confident the 520m trip will be within reach of her inform speedster Agent Chevrolet.

The son of Fernando Bale will contest a 400m 5th grade final at Wagga on Friday night before heading into unchartered waters on Boxing Day on the opening night of the Shoalhaven Greyhound Racing Club Summer Carnival at Nowra.

Agent Chevrolet has drawn Box 5 in the second heat of the Tony McDonald Memorial 5th Grade Series (520m) at the Pinebowl circuit on the NSW South Coast.

"His run homes here at Wagga have been really strong," Fothergill said.

"He's been running home in crazy times so I think he'll run it.

"He's gone through his grades over the shorts and he's still grade five over 500 so it's time to give him a crack."

Fothergill also has no concerns that the Nowra contest is just four days after Agent Chevrolet chases his sixth straight Wagga win on Friday where he's the $1.55 favourite.

"I think he's one of those dogs that the more racing he does, the better he goes," she said.

"He relishes work and he's a very fit dog.

"I've never actually trialled the dog.

"I just race him and work him and that seems to agree with him."

Fothergill picked Agent Chevrolet up for "not much" after the black dog was winless from his first five starts in Victoria.

Since joining his new kennel the May 2021 whelp has won seven of his 13 NSW starts, only unplaced on two occasions, and he also equalled the Wagga 320m track record when running a blistering 17.94 on November 20.

"He wasn't the hardest of chasers early on," Fothergill said.

"I've just tried to keep changing things up with him and one of the things I did deliberately do was not trial him and it seems to have worked.

"That and he's a more mature dog that's full of confidence."

The $5000-to-the-winner Tony McDonald Memorial 5th Grade Series Final will be run at Nowra on New Year's Day.

Other feature races at the venue in the coming weeks include;

  • Greg Myers Non Graded Memorial (520m) (Heats: January 8, Final: January 15) – ($5000-to-the-winner)
  • Premium Tyres Les Thompson Memorial Maiden (520m) (Heats: January 15, Final: January 22) – ($5000-to-the-winner)
