Australia's Biggest Outback Carnival Ready To Go

THE Broken Hill Cup Carnival kicks off on Sunday when the outback track hosts the first of six meetings before the end of June.

The feature race of the carnival is the $10,000-to-the-winner Broken Hill Greyhound Racing Club Fabtech Cup (525m) which headlines the June 2 meeting.

Other major events during the carnival are the $5500-to-the-winner Sportsbet Richest Outback Maiden Final (375m), and the Broken Hill Local Cup Final (375m).

"We don't get huge crowds here. We might get a few hundred on Cup night but the size of the crowd is going to be dependent on the temperature," BRGRC President Regan Edgecumbe said.

"We'll have some live music on Cup night, food vans and things like that to liven the night up.

"It is a bit hard on a Sunday evening, people obviously work the following day and the nights are starting to get a bit fresher.

"It can drop to something like five degrees and when it gets that cold it's not conducive to getting the locals out of their homes."

Kennels from South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales are expected to converge on Broken Hill, starting this Sunday as trainers prepare their dogs for the June 2 meeting.

"Trainers that come here for the first time, whether it be from other parts of New South Wales or interstate, they love the atmosphere of our meetings," Edgecumbe said.

"It's a real outback racing experience.

"We've got about 20 licenced local trainers and there's around 70 dogs in the district.

"A lot of our kennels are family based so a kennel here could two or three different family members training off the one property.

"All of our trainers here are hobby trainers."

Edgecumbe said the best of the locals heading towards the Cup would be Kaylene Hatzi-trained Who Knows Lyn which runs in the Thinking of the Hockley Family Stake (525m) this Sunday and Who Knows Gus which goes around in a Brother Fox heat at Dubbo on Saturday.
